Moroccan Islamists now a key part of anti-Israel movement
Morocco’s anti-Israel protests continue to attract thousands as all over the country, demos going ahead on December 10, according to Reuters.
The protesters continued to voice their discontent at the kingdom’s normalisation of ties with Israel as well as addressing what they perceive to be a lack of action from the international community on the war crimes taking place in the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The Islamist Justice and Develpment Party (PJD) who played a key part in first normalising ties with the Middle Eastern state have rolled back on their stance instead attempting to be the leading voice for solidarity with the Palestinian struggle in Morocco.
Mustafa Al-Khalfi, former media minister and member of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), attended the recent protest in Rabat, marking the first time a former official of the PJD government joined a public anti-normalisation protest.

During the day of action, the politician told reporters, “Moroccans today express with one voice their comprehensive and absolute solidarity with the Palestinian people and their resistance in the battle for existence,”
In an interview with Al Araby TV back in September, former Moroccan Prime Minister and PJD member Salaheddin El-Othmani expressed deep sadness for normalising ties with Israel claiming that the pressure got to him.
He said, “That moment [signing the normalisation deal] was painful and difficult. But it was a decision of a state and I was head of government,”
The Islamists were in government at the time that the ex-Prime Minister had established ties with Israel, despite the MENA region’s strong anti-Zionist sentiment which has strengthened since October 7.
