On August 30th, Libya’s central bank governor, Seddik al-Kabir, said he and other senior bank staff fled the country following threats from armed groups, reported The Arab Weekly

Al-Kabir’s location is unspecified, but according to him, armed militias have been threatening bank staff in an attempt to push him out of office as tensions escalate between rival administrations over the bank’s management.

The situation has persisted for over a month, beginning when a group of men, some armed, besieged the bank, demanding the removal of Al-Kabir.

On August 18, the bank shut down after the abduction of Musaab Muslam, the head of the information technology department. The bank resumed operations after his release.

The Presidency Council Chief Mohammed al-Menfi’s decision to sack Central Bank of Libya (CBL) chief Sadiq al-Kabir led to the suspension of production and exports of oil in eastern Libya.

The affected areas account for approximately 90 percent of the country’s oil fields and terminals.
