Morocco’s unemployment rate has risen to 13.3% in 2024

According to Middle East Monitor on February 3rd, the unemployment rate in urban areas stayed fairly high at 16.9 per cent, whilst it increased from 6.3% to 6.8% in more rural areas.
The commission said the youth unemployment rate remained the same at 36.7% among 15-24 year olds. The Unemployed amongst this age group are referred to as NEETs, meaning Not in Education, Employment, or Training.
All this comes as Morocco attempted to launch the “e-dirham”, a form of digital currency in July 2024 in an effort to boost the economy. As well as this, Maghrebi reported in February 2024 that the Moroccan PM vowed to “make jobs a priority”, a promise he has not quite delivered on in light of the recent figures.
Despite this stark picture, Morocco’s labour market created over 82,000 new jobs in 2024, stated the commission.
It has been estimated that Morocco will experience a 3.8% GDP growth in 2025 as a result of expansion in both the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors.
