Ethiopia: HIV levels soar in war-torn Tigray region

HIV levels have soared in Ethiopia’s Tigray region following two years of war, with widespread sexual abuse and STD transmission.

Reported by AP News on March 26^th, as many as 10% of women and girls between 15 and 49 were subjected to sexual abuse at the same time as Tigray’s health system was looted and destroyed resulting in a proliferation of sexual infections and disease.

Today, the HIV rate in Tigray is more than double the prewar average. The Trump administration’s decision to kill 83% of US Agency for International Development programs is globally worsening the situation.
