Morocco advances African stability

Morocco has been praised for its commitment to continental peace and stability as it held the presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council in March.

According to government-friendly Atalayar, this recognition comes as the North African country has demonstrated strong leadership in mediating multiple crises affecting the continent.

Guided by a royal vision emphasising proactive solidarity, Morocco’s presidency of the Peace and Security Council is helping to establish an Africa capable of controlling its future.

During its leadership last March, Morocco focused on pressing issues including artificial intelligence, climate change, and security challenges. Notably, they orchestrated important talks on March 18th in Addis Ababa, facilitating consultations with six nations currently suspended from the AU – Burkina Faso, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Sudan.

Through these efforts, Morocco aimed to assess democratic transitions in these countries while fostering ongoing engagement with the African Union.

This outreach to nations facing challenges, coupled with their focus on emerging threats to the continent, has earned Moroccans considerable acclaim for their leadership of the Peace and Security Council.

Furthermore, this diplomatic initiative highlighted Morocco’s commitment to advancing full participation in the AU by extending cooperation to previously uninvolved nations.

This approach to inclusive governance has been praised by the head of Guinean diplomacy, Morissanda Kouyaté, who emphasised in a letter to the Moroccan foreign minister that ‘this initiative marks a real step forward in the management of political change in Africa, and demonstrates once again the capacity for innovation and diplomatic skill of the Alaouite Kingdom’.

Leaders in Burkina Faso, Gabon, Niger and Mali have similarly commended these endeavors.

Morocco’s capacity to garner support while bringing countries in transitional periods into constructive discussions with the African Union exemplifies the type of diplomatic engagement that can foster stability and development across the continent.

If this leadership approach continues and meaningful collaboration persists throughout Africa, the African Union can work toward building a truly prosperous continent.
