Morocco’s former Islamic Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane has drawn backlash from Amazigh activists after denouncing efforts to form an Amazigh-based political party as “divisive” during a May Day speech.

Reported by the Moroccan government friendly Hespress on May 8th, the Amazigh movement condemned his remarks as misleading and unconstitutional, asserting their right to political representation within Morocco’s pluralist framework.

The row highlights persistent ideological tensions between Islamist and modernist factions in the country’s political landscape.
