Spain has condemned Israel’s West Bank settlements as illegal

Spain has sharply condemned Israel’s approval of 22 new settlements in the West Bank, labelling the move a breach of international law, Middle East Eye reported on May 30th.
The Israelis announced the move on May 29th. In response, the Spanish foreign ministry declared in a statement that “the settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law, undermine the viability of the two-state solution, and are a threat to peace.”
Furthermore, Madrid stated that the expansion of Israeli settlements directly harms prospects for stability in the region. Spanish officials voiced grave concern. They expressed their “deepest dismay” over intensified Israeli military actions around Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams refugee camps. Likewise, the Spanish criticised the operations for worsening tensions and increasing civilian suffering.
The Spanish government also denounced the demolition of Palestinian homes, acts of settler violence, and the forced displacement of local communities. It described these actions as clear violations of international humanitarian law.
The statement concluded, stating, “peace in the region requires the realisation of a sovereign Palestinian state, comprising Gaza and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
Hence, by highlighting these developments, Spain reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful resolution based on international law and respect for human rights. Thus, the foreign ministry urged Israel to halt settlement expansion and military escalation. They emphasised the need for genuine dialogue and a return to negotiations.
Spain’s statement aligns with broader international concern over growing instability in the occupied Palestinian territories. Thereby, reflecting the mounting pressure on Israel to reconsider its approach.
