Hundreds rallied outside the Dutch parliament in The Hague, demanding urgent action over the war in Gaza. Protesters chanted for a ceasefire and waved banners calling for greater humanitarian aid, as anger swelled over the government’s stalling to recognise a Palestinian state, as reported by Al-Monitor on August 7th.

Inside, Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp addressed an emergency debate called during parliament’s summer recess. “The Netherlands is not planning to recognise a Palestinian state at this time,” he declared, dismissing appeals to shift the country’s position.

That stance diverges from other NATO allies. France has committed to recognising Palestinian statehood in September, while Britain, and also Canada, have warned it will follow unless Israel acts to ease Gaza’s suffering and agrees to a ceasefire. In return, Israel strongly condemned the nations, accusing them of rewarding Hamas for terrorism.

Israeli intentions appear to wanting to stop the domino spread of more countries recognising Palestine. However, the decision of the French, UK and Canadian governments feel substantial considering the Western allies were behind the current anyway among the international communities coordinated condemnations of Israeli actions.

Veldkamp also rejected calls to halt Dutch arms imports from Israel. He insisted the country sources weapons primarily through domestic and EU channels, not from third nations.

Despite defending existing trade and diplomatic ties with Israel, Veldkamp acknowledged the conflict’s broader consequences. He pointed to measures already taken, such as banning two Israeli ministers from entering the Netherlands. “This war has ceased to be a just war and is now leading to the erosion of Israel’s own security and identity,” he said.

Public pressure continues to rise. Dutch citizens and rights groups have grown increasingly vocal, urging stronger condemnation of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, where starvation spreads and ceasefire efforts remain stalled.
