Journalist bears the brunt of deteriorating France-Algeria ties

As tensions between France and Algeria continue to weaken their bilateral ties, the French journalist Christophe Gleizes is bearing the brunt of this behind bars as he awaits his appeal trial set to take place in autumn, as covered by Maghrebi Week on September 8th.

The sports journalist was jailed after he faced allegations last year from Algeria’s authorities of being an apologist for “terrorism” and for being in possession of “propaganda harmful to the national interest.”

His family regard him as a victim of tensions between France and Algeria, due to receiving what Reporters Without Borders director-general, Thibaut Bruttin, called an “unprecedented” and highly unreasonable sentence.
