Moroccan feminist’s “blasphemy” fails to spark real change

The Moroccan feminist, Ibtissam Lachgar’s decision to post a picture of herself online wearing a T-shirt which makes a statement concerning homosexuality, women and religion, does little to support the rights of women and the LGBT+ community, as covered by Maghrebi Week on September 8th.

In Morocco, homosexual acts could lead to a person being imprisoned for three years and 14% of girls are married before they reach 18.

As women and LGBT people are yet to enjoy equality, Lachgar’s bid to defy conservatism in Morocco falls short of fulfilling a much-needed milestone. Lachgar was nevertheless sentenced to 30 months in jail for offending Islam due to the T-shirt.
