Morocco has welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a Gaza ceasefire deal, highlighting how the outcome reached by international mediators has prompted cautious optimism from some officials, according to the Moroccan government-friendly North Africa Post on October 9th.

The Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry commended Trump’s involvement and suggested that the implementation of the deal will protect lives, facilitate humanitarian aid, and support reconstruction efforts. Morocco also reaffirmed its support for a two-state solution, envisioning a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel.

However, it has been reported that Israeli attacks on Gaza continued even as preliminary discussions took place. Talks between Israeli and Hamas officials were held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to determine the logistics of implementing the first phase of the U.S.-mediated plan, including the exchange of hostages and prisoners. The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, acknowledged that “there are a lot of holes that need to be filled,” emphasising the complexities surrounding governance and security arrangements.

Earlier negotiations have encountered deadlocks, with both sides accusing each other of obstructing proposals for temporary ceasefires. U.S. officials, including Trump, have expressed cautious optimism for progress, while Palestinian and Israeli sources have highlighted concerns surrounding long-term compliance to a deal.

The ceasefire plan itself has drawn scrutiny over aspects that remain unclear, such as timelines for Israeli troop withdrawals and the administration of displaced populations. Proposals like the “humanitarian city” in southern Gaza, intended to house Palestinian civilians while Israel maintains military control, and has been criticised for potentially infringing on Palestinian autonomy.

Morocco, whose Sovereign chairs the Al-Quds Committee, has reiterated its commitment to a negotiated peace deal that respects Palestinian self-determination. While the announcement of the ceasefire represents a potential step forward, observers stress that the success of any agreement will depend on detailed implementation, verification mechanisms, and the willingness of all parties to uphold their commitments.
