Iraq elections: prominent Sunni candidate killed in bomb attack
Safa al-Mashhadani, a rising Iraqi parliamentary candidate representing the Siyada Alliance, was killed in a bomb attack, north of Baghdad, in Iraq, Asharq al-Awsat reported on October 16th.
With under a month left before the general elections, set to take place on November 11th, the high profile assassination highlighted the instability of the Iraqi political scene and wider risks of political violence.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al Sudani has ordered an urgent investigation, while the Siyada group pointed the finger at security agencies for the attack, which also injured four others.
