Hurricane Melissa: 49 confirmed dead in the Caribbean
Following widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa across the Caribbean islands, official death tolls recorded at least 19 deaths in Jamaica and at least 25 in Haiti, raising the death toll from the Hurricane to 49, according to France 24 via Reuters on October 31st.
Authorities were scrambling to bring in relief and aid supplies as roads were inaccessible, and 70% of Jamaican households remain without electricity. In Cuba, at least 241 communities are completely isolated.
The Category 5 hurricane is now heading towards Bermuda but is not expected to hit it directly, as rescue and search efforts are continuing.
