The state of democracy in Mali has been thrown into question following the sentencing of ex-prime minister, Moussa Mara who received a two year sentence following comments he made on social media, according to Maghrebi Week on November 3rd.
The sentencing of Mara, who released comments on X expressing solidarity with detained political opponents of the Malian government, has aligned with recent criticism relating to Mali’s military junta and their approach to freedom of speech.
Mara had said: “The flame of hope never fades in them. As long as the night lasts, the sun will inevitably rise. And we will fight by all means to make that happen, and as soon as possible.”
