Moroccans celebrate 50th anniversary of Green March
On November 6th, Moroccans celebrated the 50th anniversary of the controversial Green March, which allowed Morocco to claim its alleged sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara and to remove Spain’s colonial control of the territory, according to Africanews via AP.
Celebrations took place in Morocco and in the disputed Western Sahara, and more notably in Laayoune, the largest city of the southern territory with people holding pictures of the late King Hassan II and King Mohammed VI.
Held in 1975, the Green March was a civilian and military mass demonstration that aimed to put pressure on Spain to relinquish its control over the phosphate-rich stretch of a desert.
