Western Sahara: Algeria increasingly isolated amid UN vote
Algeria’s reaction to recent UN Security Council discussions describing the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as a credible contribution to resolving the Western Sahara issue has left the country diplomatically isolated, according to the Moroccan government-friendly North Africa Post and agencies on November 9th.
The vote occurred on October 31st and states that Resolution 2797 is a “feasible solution”, which grants the Western Sahara limited self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty. Algeria did not participate in the vote and instead called for a referendum on the dispute.
Support for Morocco’s proposal has received widespread support from 130 countries, which view the plan as the most realistic resolution to the 50-year conflict between Morocco and Algeria.
