Pope Leo calls for peace and unity in Lebanon visit
Pope Leo XIV has visited Lebanon, arriving in Beirut on November 30th where he was welcomed by President Joseph Aoun, according to The National on December 1st.
The choice of the war-torn country is a strong statement from the Pope; in a prayer he asked for peace for Lebanon and the Levant. He then held interfaith meetings in Beirut’s historical Martyr’s Square.
The visit was described as a moment of “great joy” by the Grand Mufti of Lebanon, Abdul Latif Derian – a rare moment of respite amid continued Israeli strikes.
