Mozambique: Tens of thousands flee escalating violence
The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has raised the alarm on worsening violence in Northern Mozambique, forcing close to 100,000 people to flee the area, according to Africa News and agencies on 3rd December.
Fighters associated with the so-called Islamic State have been attacking villages and burning homes, forcing an estimated 1.3 million to flee since 2017. This is the fourth mass displacement this year, after close to 50,000 people were forced to leave their homes in the Cabo Delgado province last July.
The UNHCR warns that with the violence spreading to new areas and shelters overcrowded with refugee families, it will need an additional $40 million to address the crisis.
