Tanzania: Authorities call independence day protests “coup”

Tanzanian authorities have warned activists to stay home as the nation prepares for Independence Day celebrations on December 9th, according to Africa News via Reuters on the same day.

Protests related to the October 29th election have been declared unlawful by Tanzanian authorities, and planned protests on Independence Day have been designated as an attempted coup.

The election was won by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who barred opposition candidates from running, and foreign journalists were also banned from reporting. At least 700 people were killed in the post-election violence, while more than 240 others have been charged with treason.
