US threatens South Sudan with aid reduction
The United States has warned South Sudan it could reduce foreign aid to the country, after claiming the government has placed inflated fees on humanitarian groups and prohibited their operations, according to a report in Africanews on December 12th.
A statement from the US Bureau of African Affairs said the behaviour could result in a drop-off in assistance from Washington, as it defies South Sudan’s international duties.
An estimated 70% of the country’s population receive food and healthcare via humanitarian aid, with the US being one of the major donors of aid to the country.
