Following Israel’s official recognition of Somaliland, Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi announced that the group would consider any Israeli presence in Somaliland as a military target, according to the Middle East Monitor on December 29th.

He further revealed concerns that “the Israeli enemy seeks to make Somaliland a foothold for hostile activities against Somalia, African countries, Yemen and Arab countries”.

Somaliland originally declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has its own currency and army. Israel is the first country to recognise Somaliland.
