Israeli forces killed a Palestinian who crossed the so-called “yellow line” in southern Gaza, as reported by the Middle East Eye and agencies on January 2nd.

According to a statement from Israel’s military regarding the January 2nd incident, a “terrorist…approached the troops, posing an immediate threat to them.”

Under the US-backed ceasefire that came into effect on October 10th, Israeli forces were required to withdraw from the Gaza Strip; the yellow line represents the areas of Gaza under Israeli control.

Israeli forces have killed multiple Palestinians, including two children, since the line was established, usually under the guise of defence against terrorists who crossed the line.

Concerns have been raised that the line, which is not clearly marked, could lead to the de facto partition of Gaza. Israeli soldiers have been witnessed moving markers to further restrict Palestinian movement.

On December 24th, it was reported that Israeli forces had launched strikes along the yellow line, while also targeting areas of Gaza with tank fire.

These attacks occurred one day after Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that Israeli forces would remain “deep inside Gaza” and never leave, allegedly with the purpose of preventing terrorism and protecting the Palestinian civilian population.

Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire terms, which have killed over 400 people since coming into effect in October. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry on December 27th, Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed an estimated 71,000 people since October 2023.

Furthermore, Gaza has been under an Israeli-imposed land, sea and air blockade since 2007, which led to electricity and food supply shortages. Around two-thirds of Gazan households were considered food insecure in 2019, with conditions worsening amid Israel’s genocidal war.

In 2021, conditions in Gaza were described as “hell on earth” by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who cited Israel’s repeated bombardment of the territory.

Despite the wartorn conditions in Gaza, Israeli settlers have increasingly sought to re-establish Jewish settlements in Gaza, which were dismantled in 2005 under then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s settler disengagement initiative.

On December 18th, dozens of settlers affiliated with the far-right Nachala Movement broke into Gaza and raised the Israeli flag before being prevented from progressing further into Gaza by Israeli forces.

Plans to construct settlements for Ultra-Orthodox Jewish soldiers were confirmed by Katz on December 23rd, despite settlement expansion being widely regarded as illegal under international law.
