Hundreds of Libyans assembled outside the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSML) headquarters in the town of Ganjour on December 5, delivering a forceful message against what they described as persistent foreign interference in the country’s political future, as reported by the Libya Review.

The demonstration reflected growing public frustration with Libya’s prolonged political impasse and renewed calls for sovereignty and elections. Protesters gathered near the UN facility to denounce the influence of external actors on Libya’s governance, arguing that international involvement has deepened political paralysis rather than resolve it. Demonstrators held signs and chanted slogans calling for a Libyan-led political process, asserting that decisions about the country’s leadership should be made domestically and without outside pressure.

Speakers addressing the crowd accused international stakeholders of endorsing transitional authorities that, in their view, lack clear popular legitimacy. According to demonstrators, continued recognition of such administrations has allowed political divisions to persist and delayed the formation of stable governing institutions. Protesters said this dynamic has left Libya trapped in a cycle of temporary arrangements with no clear path toward elected leadership.

Calls for elections featured prominently throughout the rally. Participants demanded the rapid creation of a unified national government with a clear mandate to organise presidential and parliamentary elections. Many stressed that restoring the electoral process is critical to transferring authority back to the Libyan people and ending years of institutional fragmentation.

Economic concerns were also a central theme. Protesters voiced anger over the ongoing smuggling and theft of Libya’s oil resources, which they described as occurring with minimal international scrutiny. The loss of oil revenues continues to drain the country’s primary source of national income and is exacerbating economic hardship. Demonstrators called for transparent investigations and punitive measures against those responsible for exploiting the country’s resources.

The rally concluded with a warning directed at both Libyan authorities and international organisations. Protesters said continued inaction on political reform, elections, and resource protection would lead to broader public mobilisation.

Their demands signalled that future demonstrations could intensify if tangible progress toward political resolution and national accountability is not achieved.
