Tensions across US felt by winners of Golden Globes 2026

While the 83rd Golden Globes took place on 11th January, tensions across the US underscored the evening, according to The National. 

The event took place in Beverly Hills, California but saw political frictions in the US attributed to the shooting of Renee Good by immigration authorities and Trump’s intervention in Venezuela.

Yet, with winners of several categories including Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another and Adolescence, from streaming service Netflix, the awards saw much to be celebrated. Another credit to Netflix was the largely popular film, KPop Demon Hunters, which won significantly with their song Golden and their animation style.

Several other major film features and television programmes received awards last night. Hamnet by Chloe Zhao took several awards, alongside Ryan Coolger’s Sinners.

In the Non-English Language category for Best Motion Picture, there were several nominees, with It Was Just an Accident, by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Pahani and The Voice of Hind Rajab directed by Tunisian director, Kaouther Ben Hania. Nominated alongside these were No Other Choice, Sirat and Sentimental Value, with The Secret Agent winning the category. Under film categories, Rose Byrne won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, with Timothee Chalamet winning the male equivalent in Marty Supreme. For Best Performance in Drama, Jessie Buckley in Hamnet, and Wagner Moura in The Secret Agent were the winning choices. Within supporting actor roles, Teyana Taylor took the win for the Best Female Role in One Battle After Another and Stellan Skarsgard, the Best Male Role in Sentimental Value.

Under television categories, The Pitt took home Best Drama, alongside The Studio, which won Best Comedy or Musical. Rhea Seehorn won with Pluribus the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Drama and with The Pitt, Noah Wyle won Male Actor. For Best Performance in Musical or Comedy, the winners were Jean Smart with Hacks, and Seth Rogan with The Studio. Michelle Williams in Dying for Sex and Stephen Graham in Adolescence both won the category of Best Performance in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

Within Best Stand-Up Comedy and Podcast, Ricky Gervais won Stand-Up with Mortality, and Amy Poehler won Best Podcast with her podcast Good Hang.
