Tunisia: shortages leave thousands without access to water

Severe water shortages in Tunisia have left an estimated 300.000 people without access to drinking water, particularly in rural areas, reports APA News on 9th January.

The National Water Distribution Company points the finger to “technical and climatic constraints”, after several years of drought, but there are other factors impacting water access, such as ageing infrastructure and lack of investment.

The crisis is forcing families to buy water from private cisterns at inflated prices, and it has left farmers struggling to water their crops, with a growing number abandoning their land.
