Amnesty International has accused Ugandan security forces of using torture and arbitrary arrests as part of a crackdown on opposition ahead of the January 15th presidential election, as reported by Maghrebi Week on January 12th.

The human rights monitor has reportedly gathered evidence of security forces beating protestors and firing tear gas at supporters of  President Yower Museveni’s main opposition candidate, Bobi Wine of the National Union Party.

Since early 2025, at least 550 people have been arrested and detained by security forces, with Amnesty reporting that detainees were subjected to beatings, being tasered and pepper-sprayed while in state custody.
