Germany and Israel sign security pact
Germany and Israel have signed a security pact to increase cooperation in areas of counter-terrorism and cyber defence, as reported by The New Arab and agencies on January 12th.
This is according to a statement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, which said “Iran and its proxies — Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis — threaten not only Israel but also regional stability and international security.”
“The declaration signed [on January 11th] anchors deep cooperation with Germany in the fields of cyber security, counterterrorism and advanced technologies.”
The statement added that “Israel’s enemies should know: our eyes are on them at all times and everywhere.”
Netanyahu and Alexander Dobrindt, Germany’s Interior Minister, signed the declaration, further signalling a strengthening of ties between the nations, which share a long-standing alliance.
In a separate statement, Netanyahu said, “I think Germany and Israel are natural partners. We’ve cooperated on the Arrow III; we’ve cooperated in many areas.”
Also, on January 11th, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar held talks with Dobrindt, where he urged the EU to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a “terrorist organisation.”
On December 18th, it was reported that Israel and Germany had reached an agreement for an arms deal worth $3.1 billion, under which Tel Aviv would supply Berlin with Arrow III missile defence systems.
Speaking about the agreement, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said that Germany’s approval of the deal “is a clear expression of the deep trust that Germany places in the State of Israel.”
In September, Katz posted a threat on X to unleash biblical plagues upon Yemen’s Houthis, saying, “The Houthis are firing missiles at Israel again. A plague of darkness, a plague of the firstborn, we will complete all ten plagues.”
Although Germany suspended military exports to Israel on August 8th, in response to Israeli plans to fully occupy Gaza, this suspension was set to be lifted on November 24th.
On November 2nd, it was reported that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had reaffirmed German support for the US-backed ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, despite Israel violating the ceasefire hundreds of times since October 10th.
Between October 2023 and May 2025, Germany granted military equipment export licenses to Israel worth $564 million, making it the second-largest supplier of weapons to Israel, accounting for 47% of the exports, while the US covers the remaining 53%.
German support for Israel has appeared almost unwavering, even as Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed at least 71,ooo people and Israel continues to escalate violence across the occupied territories.
