Somali president desires unity with Somaliland
The Somali president pushed for new communication lines between Somalia and Somaliland, according to Middle East Monitor via Anadolu Agency on January 18th.
While the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has offered to reach a level of understanding between the two sides, he remains firm on the matter of the unification between Somalia and Somaliland, according to Anadolu agency.
This unity was proposed as Mohamud’s initiative, amid his visit to a provincial capital in Somaliland. His visit formed the first one of its kind in decades, representing the urgency in his plans for reunification.
After a declaration of independence in 1991, Somaliland has remained internationally unrecognised as an independent state. The region has built its own political identity, running its own government and attempting to gain recognition from other countries as an independent state.
Israel’s move to see Somaliland as a sovereign state, took place on December 26th, but Israel has remained alone in its choice, with this bringing much critique across Somalia in their doing so.
Whilst in Las Anod, part of the Sool region, President Mohamud sought to view the swearing-in event of the president in the recently formed Northeast state.
The Somali president’s office has been clear that the visit from Mohamud is symbolic in its efforts, and it has presented the importance of the unification to mark where Somalia’s territory lies. It has been confirmed that part of this firm stance is formed by the desire to have sovereignty for Somalia, forming an integrated national identity.
