Uganda: protests erupt and clashes with police escalate
Police in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, fired tear gas at demonstrators and extinguished fires after the electoral commission released early results showing that President Yoweri Museveni had been leading the presidential ballot, according to Africanews via AP on January 16th.
According to The Guardian on January 17th, Museveni has since won the election. Footage from the city showed crowds sprinting through the streets as clouds of tear gas drifted overhead.
Officers were also seen dousing a blaze burning along a major road as security forces attempted to regain control. The election process, had been overshadowed by an internet shutdown, widespread delays at polling stations, and opposition allegations of ballot stuffing.
