Guinea-Bissau has set the date for presidential and legislative elections for December 6th, 2026, following a coup in November 2025, according to a Reuters report on January 22nd.

The Guinea-Bissau military took over a day before election results were announced, culminating in the arrests of both incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and his opponent, Fernando Dias.

The West African bloc ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) had threatened to impose sanctions and deploy troops in Guinea-Bissau.
