Israel has been called on to withdraw from Gaza by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, according to the Middle East Monitor via Anadolu Agency on January 25th.

He also called for the reopening of the Rafah border crossing, an important route for aid to be delivered into Gaza.

These calls to Israel formed part of conversations held in Cairo with the Deputy Secretary of State of the US, Christopher Landau. Abdelatty and Landau’s meeting was held in order to look at regional developments.

In their meeting, Abdelatty and Landau also evaluated the relations between Egypt and the US, looking at strategies to strengthen their relations. The two officials also discussed the development of political and economic means between the two countries. However, they also discussed the situation in Gaza and that of African countries. Abdelatty welcomed Egypt’s participation in the ‘Board of Peace’ created by the US President, Donald Trump.

The motivation for the board is to provide a stable environment internationally, establishing governance and rule of law that is respectable and seeks peaceful relations in places that are struggling with conflict and wider hardship. The board has recently been expanded by Morocco’s agreement to join and Bahrain’s acceptance of Trump’s offer.

Abdelatty urged for Trump’s plan for Gaza to be put in place and backed the stabilisation force’s stationing in Gaza to keep the ceasefire agreement upheld. He also supported the idea of a national committee being in charge of running the Palestinian territory.

Israel’s Army Radio has reportedly stated that the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu has come to an agreement with Washington for the Rafah crossing to be reopened. Walla, an Israeli news website, has reported that this will be in effect in the coming days.
