The head of the armed forces of South Sudan, Gen Paul Nang Majok, has ordered troops to “crush the rebellion” in the east, within seven days, according to the BBC on January 23rd.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA‑IO) has recently seized several areas in Jonglei state, and fighting has been moving closer to Jonglei’s capital, Bor, which is located about two hours by road from Juba.

Lt Gen Peter Thok Chuol Luak, the SPLA‑IO acting chief of staff issued a warning to residents of Juba. He said: “We strongly recommend that all South Sudanese citizens in areas on the outskirts of Juba either evacuate or remain indoors.”
