The European Union has agreed to grant Tunisia €35.8m as part of its broader Global Gateway Africa–Europe Investment Package, which will help boost Tunisia’s clean energy and infrastructure projects, as reported by Maghrebi Week on January 26th.

Tunisia’s electricity production is less than its energy demand, and it relies heavily on Algerian Gas to meet its energy needs. The EU grants are designed to support Tunisia’s aim of getting 35% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035.

However, some critics argue that European energy projects are driven by their own diversification needs, rather than Tunisia’s domestic interests.
