Polisario Front urged to accept Moroccan sovereignty by US
US President Donald Trump has urged the Algerian-backed Polisario Front to accept Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara territory, as reported by Maghrebi Week on February 2nd.
The Polisario Front continues to reject the widely supported Moroccan Autonomy Plan, or Resolution 2797, which would grant the Western Sahara and its inhabitants limited self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty, bringing an end to the territorial dispute that has persisted since 1975.
Although it is unclear what will happen if the Polisario Front refuses to accept Moroccan sovereignty, the US has reportedly dismissed the separatist group’s efforts to hold an independence referendum over the territory.
