Amnesty slams Algeria on forceful return of Tunisian politician
Algeria forced the return of asylum seeker Seifeddine Makhlouf to Tunisia, which global rights group, Amnesty, called a violation of international law, Maghrebi Week reported on February 2nd.
Makhlouf, who was a former parliamentarian and government critic, is a wanted man in Tunisia and sought asylum in Algeria in July 2024. He was arrested upon arrival in Tunisia to serve the sentence.
Amnesty called out Algeria’s actions of forced return without an assessment of protection needs, citing “unlawful refoulement”, and its broader crackdown on migrants and refugees without due process.
