Putin meets Al-Sharaa to revise Syria base deal
Russian President Vladimir Putin met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Moscow on January 28 as the Kremlin pushes to protect its strategic military foothold and long-term interests in Syria, as reported by Maghrebi Week on February 2nd.
The talks come amid Russia’s efforts to rebuild regional influence following the fall of Bashar al-Assad, whose removal weakened Moscow’s position after years of close political and military cooperation.
While the issue was not publicly discussed, the future of Russia’s Hmeimim airbase and Tartus naval facility, critical hubs for operations across the Middle East and the Mediterranean, was expected to be high on the agenda.
