Tunisia extends state of emergency laws until end of 2026
The Tunisian government has published a new decree extending the state of emergency rule until the end of 2026, according to La Presse on 31st January. It had last been renewed in January 2026 for a month.
This allows the regime to carry out extrajudicial arrests and monitor opposition figures, as well as impose curfews. It limits Tunisians’ right of assembly, giving free reign’s to Kais Saied’s increasingly authoritarian rule.
The state of emergency has been regularly extended since a terror attack in November 2015, which targeted the presidential security team in Tunis and caused 3 deaths.
