UN ceasefire monitoring team to be deployed in Congo: Qatar
Qatar’s foreign ministry said that the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo will oversee the ceasefire between the Congo Army and the M23 rebel group in the coming days, according to a Reuters report on February 2nd.
The two sides have agreed to the terms in the ceasefire monitoring mechanism detailed in the Qatar-mediated talks in October, making progress in the ceasefire agreement.
The UN team will be deployed in the strategic eastern town of Uvira, which was recently infiltrated by the M23 rebels and has since been restored to the Congolese army’s control. This push to deploy ceasefire monitoring comes against continued conflict in eastern Congo.
