A jihadist attack on a fuel tanker convoy in Mali’s Western Kayes region killed at least 15 people, as reported by Maghrebi Week on February 9th.

The incident occurred on January 29th on a road leading to the Senegalese border; local officials stated that dozens of tankers were set ablaze and destroyed in the ambush.

In a statement, the al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) said it ambushed Malian forces in Kayes, but did not mention attacking the convoy. Mali has been under a JNIM-imposed fuel blockade since September 2025, which seeks to destabilise the junta government and incite civil unrest.
