Morocco joins EU aid monitor

Morocco has joined an EU-backed mechanism to monitor humanitarian aid sent to the Tindouf refugee camps in Algeria, as reported by Maghrebi Week on February 9th.

Under this mechanism, Rabat will have a formal role in scrutinising the use of EU funds and food aid being sent to the camps, which house Sahrawi refugees from the disputed Western Sahara territory.

Rabat’s primary reason for this scrutiny is concern over the influence of the Algerian-backed Polisario Front, a separatist militia that controls the camps and has rejected Morocco’s autonomy plan, which would grant the Western Sahara limited self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty.
