UN criticises Burkinabe political party dissolution
Burkina Faso’s military junta has been criticised by the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, for the dissolution of political parties, as reported by Maghrebi Week on February 16th.
The dissolution of political parties was announced on January 29th, with Burkinabe Interior Minister Emile Zerbo arguing that the presence of a multi-party system has promoted “division among citizens and weakened the social fabric.”
Since 2022, Burkina Faso has been under military junta rule, with Captain Ibrahim Traoré seizing power in September 2022 following a military coup that ousted the former transitional president, Lieutenant Colonel Paul‑Henri Sandaogo Damiba.
