A Tunis court has sentenced the accomplices of a police constable who killed five people in an attack against the Ghriba synagogue on the island of Djerba in May 2023, reports RFI on 17th February.

The assailant died during the attack, and his main accomplice, whose name was not revealed, was sentenced to 15 years jail in absentia. Others associated to the assault received lesser sentences.

The attack deeply impacted Djerba’s Jewish residents, who form one of the last remaining Jewish communities in the country. The Ghriba synagogue, allegedly the oldest in the world, is a site of pilgrimage that attract thousands every year.
