Algeria accused of downplaying role in Western Sahara dispute
Algeria has been accused of downplaying its role in the longstanding Western Sahara territorial dispute, as reported by Maghrebi Week on February 23rd.
During talks at the US Embassy in Madrid between February 8th and 9th, Algeria was accused of obscuring its involvement in the issue by suggesting that the Polisario Front, a separatist militia, was responsible for direct negotiations with Morocco.
Reportedly, the Arabic version of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, or Resolution 2797, contradicts the Algerian government’s claim that “two parties”, Morocco and the Polisario Front, were involved in negotiations, while Algeria and Mauritania held an “observer role.”
