A gigantic project for a new Trans-Sahara gas pipeline linking Algeria to Nigeria is feasible according to experts, reports Algerie 360 on 22 February.

The project, due to start in March 2026, has been described as unworkable by critics, but a new report by American expert Geoff Porter notes that it is technically feasible, particularly compared to more complex projects involving submarine structures. He also highlighted Algeria’s experience and the fact that state-owned oil giant Sonatrach will be in charge of the project. Sonatrach is a pillar of Algerian economy and has recently signed major deals with Italian group ENI and Saudi Midad Energy, confirming its status as a trusted partner in the oil and gas industry.

The pipeline would be over 4000 km long and would transport 30 billion cubic meters of gas per year, from Nigeria towards Algeria’s Mediterranean gas hub in Hassi R’Mel, crossing through the Sahara desert and Niger. It would thus allow quick access to European markets, through existing pipelines: Medgaz connects Algeria to Spain, and Trans-Med to Italy. As the war in Ukraine rages on, European states have been looking for new partners to keep up with demand.

The project was one of the main points of discussion when Niger’s president General Abdourahmane Tchiani was received by Algerian President Tebboune in Algiers in mid-February, with the two countries resuming their diplomatic relationships after the “drone crisis” of April 2025. The Trans-Sahara pipeline would become one of the largest pipelines in Africa, directly competing with the Moroccan pipeline project that will also end in Nigeria and is currently in its first phase.

Algeria has been trying to diversify its economy, which relies mainly on hydrocarbons. The pipeline would allow the North African state to position itself not only as a provider, but as the door into African resources for European markets.
