Constitutional crisis sparks concerns for Libya elections
Libya’s Supreme Judicial Council has condemned the takeover of its headquarters in Tripoli by forces aligned with the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Chamber in Benghazi, calling the move an unlawful usurpation of authority that threatens the unity and independence of the judiciary, as reported by the Libya Gazette on February 23.
The council said it will pursue legal action and urged all judges and judicial bodies to reject division and uphold the rule of law amid ongoing institutional fragmentation.
The incident adds to broader governance tensions in Libya, where competing legal and political authorities have deepened institutional stalemates whilst undermining the legal framework needed to hold national elections.
