Egypt and Sudan issue joint unity statement
Egypt has reiterated its support for the Sudanese army in a joint statement released 26 February. According to Middle East Monitor, the statement affirmed Cairo’s backing of Sudan’s state institutions.
The statement, which followed meetings between Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and his Sudanese counterpart Kamel Idris, stressed the importance of preserving Sudan’s sovereignty during the ongoing conflict. It also emphasised the need to restore stability and allow Sudanese institutions to resume full operations.
Both sides highlighted the importance of extending legitimate state authority, addressing the humanitarian situation and preventing further fragmentation of the country’s political and security structures.
Egypt reaffirmed its longstanding position in favour of Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity. It also expressed support for efforts to restore security and stability. The statement further highlighted coordination in managing the humanitarian and economic impact of the conflict, alongside continued cooperation in areas such as water management.
The joint statement outlined plans for Egypt to support Sudan’s future reconstruction, particularly in infrastructure, electricity and water services. Egypt committed to providing technical and engineering expertise to support rebuilding efforts. Both sides agreed to accelerate the work of a bilateral committee overseeing reconstruction and development priorities.
Sudanese officials expressed appreciation for Egypt’s political support and assistance during the crisis. The talks reflected continued diplomatic engagement between Cairo and Khartoum as the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and rival forces persists.
This reiteration of support comes against the backdrop of prolonged fighting in Sudan, which has displaced millions and placed significant strain on neighbouring countries. Egypt, which shares deep historical and geographic ties with Sudan, has remained closely involved in diplomatic efforts to address the conflict and its regional implications. During peace talks in Cairo in January 2026, Egyptian officials called for a nationwide truce and reiterated support for Sudan’s state institutions amid ongoing fighting.
