The Moroccan authorities are cracking down on youth protestors who live outside of the country as some get a nasty surprise when they fly back to visit relatives.

On 12 February, Zineb Kharroubi, a 28-year-old activist based in France, was detained at Marrakech airport, reports The New Arab. She had become a recognisable figure within the GenZ 212 movement.

Kharroubi was active in supporting the youth-led protests from abroad and became well known among diaspora organisers. Her arrest prompted concern among activists in France, where solidarity demonstrations have since been organised demanding her release. They are also calling for greater transparency regarding ongoing judicial proceedings linked to the movement.

Moroccan diaspora groups gathered in cities including Paris and Marseille in solidarity with protesters facing legal action at home. Demonstrators condemned what organisers described as a sustained crackdown on young activists and called for due process in cases linked to the protests.

These protests reflect the increasing visibility of the GenZ 212 movement abroad. The movement first emerged in late 2025 as an online-coordinated mobilisation centred on social and economic grievances. Protesters expressed frustration over unemployment, rising living costs and pressure on healthcare services, alongside concerns about governance and accountability. What began as digital activism developed into coordinated street demonstrations across the country.

Inside Morocco, authorities have maintained that arrests and prosecutions are aimed at preserving public order. Officials have emphasised the legal basis for judicial proceedings. However, human rights organisations have raised concerns about due process, pre-trial detention and the proportionality of charges brought against participants.

Prosecutors have released figures relating to arrests and convictions linked to the GenZ 212 demonstrations, highlighting the scale of the state response. Rights groups have also accused authorities of excessive force and arbitrary detentions in certain instances, intensifying debate around the balance between security measures and civil liberties.

Alongside judicial measures, officials have announced social policy initiatives which some analysts interpret as attempts to address underlying frustrations. The government has expanded welfare measures, such as child benefit, and increased public messaging directed at youth engagement.

Kharroubi’s detention and the demonstrations organised abroad highlight how the GenZ 212 protests have extended beyond Morocco’s borders. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
