Authorities have revealed new details surrounding the fatal shooting of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, outlining how investigators reconstructed the events that led to his death which have led to the identification of several suspects believed to be involved.

In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office said field and technical investigations uncovered the circumstances of the assassination and pointed to three individuals suspected of carrying out the attack on February 3th, as reported by Libya Eye on March 5th.

According to prosecutors, the attackers had been monitoring the victim near his residence and closely tracking his movements for a period of time, suggesting a high level of coordination and intel. Investigators believe the suspects waited until they saw an opportunity to enter the property.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi had increasingly been viewed as a potential contender in any future Libyan elections. While his name remained closely tied to a past many Libyans hoped to move beyond, he also represented, for others, a possible alternative to the two dominant political camps centred around Khalifa Haftar in the east and Abdul Hamid Dbeibah in Tripoli.

In a landscape shaped by competing international interests, from Russia and the United Arab Emirates to American and wider Western interests in Libya, Saif al-Islam’s re-emergence represented a challenge to the entrenched power bases in Benghazi and Tripoli, offering a different political option in a country where external powers have long hedged their bets on rival factions.

In an official statement, Gaddafi’s family responded to the latest findings by calling for a comprehensive investigation into all of those who were involved in the planning and cover-up of the assassination, stating that simply identifying the suspected killers is not enough, as reported by the Libya Review on March 6th.

The statement by the Attorney Generals Office said the group climbed over the residence’s wall before confronting Gaddafi inside the yard. Once inside, they reportedly surrounded him in a confined space that left him unable to escape or find cover. The assailants then aimed machine guns at him and unleashed a heavy volley of gunfire.

Multiple bullets struck the victim’s body while other rounds hit the surrounding area. The attack ended with his death at the scene.

Based on the evidence collected, prosecutors said three primary suspects have been identified and orders have been issued for their arrest as the investigation continues.
