Algeria criminalises French colonial rule in revised landmark law
Algeria’s parliament has approved a revised law condemning French colonial rule and removing earlier provisions, as reported by Maghrebi Week on March 16th.
The legislation, adopted on March 9th, still declares France’s colonisation of Algeria between 1830 and 1962 a crime, but was amended to better reflect the government’s official position.
Under the revised text, Algeria no longer calls for compensation from Paris but is still seeking compensation for victims of French nuclear tests conducted during the colonial era.
