Nguesso secures fifth term in Congo Republic vote
Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso was re-elected for a fifth consecutive term following the country’s presidential election, according to provisional results announced on 17 March, Africanews reported.
Interior Minister Raymond Zephirin Mboulou said Sassou N’Guesso won 94.82% of the vote, with turnout reported at 84.65%. Six other candidates contested the election, with opposition candidate Mabio Mavoungou Zinga, placing second having gained 1.48% of the vote.
The results are subject to validation by the Constitutional Court. Sassou N’Guesso, 82, has ruled the country for more than four decades, with a brief interruption between 1992 and 1997.
